As far as I know I have built the only two car garage observatory in Calgary Alberta Canada. The dome is 10 feet in diameter and is built as a second floor of my garage. At the time I built it I was restricted to height of 18 feet.  Two years later the building code changed to 25 feet, to allow home builders in my neighbor hood to build 2 story houses. As a result I was faced with a few challenges and had to build the dome walls inside of the roof. There are several pages of plans in the construction section.

Being a mechanic has had many advantages for me with my hobby, I have had access to machining tools lathes and welders. All of which I have used in the fabrication of the telescope mount, dome gears and drive mechanisms.

It took me one summer to build the garage and dome. I have the last 22 years modifying the dome and drives, telescope mount and adding computer CCD and video systems.

I ground and polished the 8 inch Newtonian mirror at the Calgary Science Centre when they were running a program to grind and polish their own mirrors. When I finished all the grinding and polishing the result was a tenth wave mirror which then sent out and had it aluminized.

That was also the first time that I got involved with the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada Calgary Branch.

My main hobby is amateur astronomy but I also enjoy several others, including photography, gardening, and oil painting. It now seems that I have added another hobby, this web site.
